Snow Skiing Essentials You Need Before Learning Skiing in India

If you’re planning to learn snow skiing or snowboarding this winter — whether at IISM Gulmarg or with Go Careless — this list of snow skiing essentials is for you.

Most institutes provide only the bare essentials — skis, poles, boots, and maybe a windcheater.
But there’s a lot more you’ll need to make your skiing trip smooth, safe, and comfortable.

When you have the right gear, you can stop worrying about the cold — and start focusing on what matters most: learning and having fun.

So, here’s a complete checklist of skiing essentials, general winter gear, and a few location-specific tips to make your snow adventure unforgettable.

Part 1: Snow Skiing/ snowboarding Essentials

These are the items you’ll need on the slopes — for comfort, protection, and better performance.
Note: This Snow skiing essential list applies to snowboarding as well.

1. Sun Hat

You won’t need a warm cap while skiing — it’s a workout, and you’ll be sweating most of the time.
Keep a sun hat handy for UV protection. On days when it’s snowing, carry your wool cap in your pocket — just in case.

2. UV-Protected Ski Goggles

This one’s non-negotiable.
Snow reflects up to 90% of sunlight, and without proper goggles, you’ll barely be able to open your eyes.

You don’t need expensive ₹5,000+ ones — even a good-quality pair from Amazon or Decathlon works perfectly.

3. Neck Warmer and Waterproof Gloves

Cold air and wind can dry your face and make your nose run mid-ski.
A neck warmer or bandana protects your face and helps you breathe comfortably while skiing.

Normal gloves get wet and can be Frustrating. Instead, get waterproof gloves!

4. Sunscreen (SPF 50+++)

This is another essential that’s often forgotten.
UV rays hit you from above and below — the snow reflects sunlight right back at you.
Always use SPF 50+++ sunscreen and reapply between sessions.

  1. Neutrogena Sunscreen – Link
  2. 6Darma Co Sunscreen – Link

5. Upper Body Layers

You don’t need heavy layers — skiing itself generates heat.
Keep it simple with:

  • A thermal or fleece as your base layer.
  • A windcheater or lightweight jacket on top.

If you’re going to IISM Gulmarg, they’ll provide a windcheater.
Avoid too many layers, or you’ll overheat quickly.

6. Waterproof Snow Pants

Don’t ski in jeans or regular trousers — they’ll get wet and stay wet.
Invest in waterproof snow pants that keep you dry and let you move freely.

7. Knee-Length Woolen Socks

Ski boots are heavy and snug, causing friction around your ankles.
Long wool socks protect against blisters and improve comfort inside the boots.

After skiing, take off your socks, let your feet breathe, or dip them in cool water — it helps reduce swelling and soreness.

Part 2: Regular Winter Essentials

You’ll need these to stay warm and comfortable before and after your skiing sessions.

  • Warm Cap & Neck Warmer – For evenings and early mornings.
  • Multiple Thermals & Fleeces – Layering is better than one thick jacket.
  • Bright-Colored Jacket – It keeps you warm and makes your photos look amazing!
  • Snow Boots – Waterproof and ankle-high, perfect for walking on snow without getting your feet wet.

FAQs of Winter trip Essentials

  1. Can I work from home while learning skiing?
Yes! Whether you’re joining IISM Gulmarg or a private skiing course, sessions usually end by 3–4 PM. You’ll have the rest of the day free to work, relax, or explore.
If you’re heading to Gulmarg and plan to work remotely during your trip, get an Airtel Postpaid SIM.
It’s the most reliable connection in Kashmir, even offering 5G in some areas.
  2. What if I wear glasses? Can I still use ski goggles?
Absolutely. You can either buy numbered sunglasses or OTG (over-the-glass) goggles designed to fit comfortably over your specs. I’ve added the Amazon link above!
