How to Actually Prepare for Your Scuba Diving Course
You think holding your breath is the way to prep for scuba?
Wrong.
Holding your breath in a pool. Holding your breath in the water. Pushing 30 seconds. You think this is gonna help.
It won't.
Here are the 3 things that actually will.
#1: Pranayam (Deep Breathing)
Learn to take a deep breath in and a long breath out.
This is the foundation of good diving.
Why? Because underwater, panic comes from holding your breath. Pranayam teaches you to breathe deeply and calmly — exactly what you need 30 meters down.
A controlled exhale = controlled buoyancy. A calm breath = a calm diver.
Do this: 10 minutes of pranayam daily before your course. Your body will thank you.
#2: Go Swimming
Nothing prepares you for water better than being in water.
Not theory. Not holding your breath. Actual time in the pool.
Get comfortable moving underwater, understand how your body behaves, feel the resistance. Swimming removes the fear factor — and fear is what kills divers.
Do this: Swim 2–3 times a week leading up to your course.
#3: Planks
Good buoyancy is about keeping your body stable underwater.
A strong core helps you maintain trim and avoid unnecessary, exhausting movements.
Planks build that core strength. Start with 30 seconds, work up to 2 minutes.
Do this: 3–4 planks, 2–3 times a week.
The Real Prep
Pranayam + Swimming + Planks = a diver who won't panic, can move efficiently, and stays in control.
That's it. That's the prep.
