Can You Learn Scuba Diving If You Wear Glasses?

Absolutely.

You have 3 options.

Option 3: You Might Not Need Correction At All

If your prescription is small — like +1 or -1 or -2 — you might be fine without any correction.

Why? Underwater, objects appear roughly 25–33% larger and closer through your dive mask.

That magnification effect might be enough for you to see comfortably and enjoy the dive without extra help.

Best for: Very mild prescriptions only.

Option 2: Disposable Contact Lenses

Wear disposable lenses under your mask.

Pro: Even if your mask floods, you're not losing much. Con: Talk to your instructor first to make sure it works for you.

Best for: People already comfortable with contact lenses.

Option 1: Prescription Dive Mask ⭐ [BEST]

Get a dive mask with corrective lenses built in.

GoCareless and our dive partners stock masks with lenses for common power ranges. If your number is around -4.5, you'll use a -4 or -5 lens depending on what's available.

Long-term win: If you're planning to dive regularly, getting your own prescription mask is the most comfortable option. One-time investment, lasts for years.

Works for: Plus or minus prescriptions.

Bottom Line

Plus or minus, weak or strong prescription — you can absolutely learn scuba diving.

Don't let glasses be your excuse.
